Image"The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them." -- Mark Twain
"A book is like a garden carried in the pocket." - Chinese proverb

It's a pity that most of us spend all of our time on science and do not read anything to feed our brains. We now provide a forum for all colleagues and academics to introduce and exchange their thought on the good books that they have read. Any discipline is open for discussion, but we reserve the right to guard our web site against porn, politics and religion.

Anyone who loves to read will appreciate Thomas Jefferson's sentiment,"I cannot live without books." Without words, without writing and without books there would be no history, and there could be no concept of humanity.

Forget about Jean-Jacoues Rousseau's saying, "I hate books; they only teach us to talk about things we know nothing about." Your contributions will help our web site be a source of reading and thinking.
Maize Pollen Coat Xylanase Facilitates Pollen Tube Penetration into Silk during Sexual Reproduction  by Der Fen Suen and Anthony H. C. Huang. 2007. J. Biol. Chem. 282: 625-636

With elimination of the xylanase by an antisense technique, the pollen tube cannot penetrate but rather grows along the silk (lower figure). This interesting finding at University of California by Der Fen Suen and Anthony H. C. Huang was highlighted as the cover article of J. Biol. Chem. 282: 625-636, January 5, 2007.  Read more

INDIA - a journey without destination  by Venkatraman Kasiviswanathan 2006 J. Genetics and Molecular Biology 17(4): 178-192
Experience is the mother of science. India has emerged as a developed country after a great deal of too many ordeals. Our fore-fathers have tried several strategies in order to uplift this country. India now has well developed immunity against several growing threats. A nation can not be called a super power without seeing its setback however it is scientifically and technically advanced. It would be a nice experience to learn about this country for a better tomorrow.  Read more

... "This book is for people who don't read, and for people who like to pretend as educated elites."

Cantor's Dilemma: A Novel  by Carl Djerassi, Penguin Books (1991) 240 pp.

A Nobel laureate's ethical "dilemma" is that he begins to suspect that one of his associate might have faked some critical data. Should he make his suspicions public, killing his own career, or wait for the inevitable process of verification to either vindicate or bury him?

An adult book? There is a little s-e-x in the novel, as chemists do need s-e-x in their boring lab life too. Anyway, it is a good book for a teaching course on science ethics.  Read more

Fuels Gold  by Fred Pearce, New Scientist September 23-29 2006 issue, p.36

Recently, academic "big wigs" and politicians have been talking about getting ethanol from sweet potato. The movement has terrific political momentum. There are fat funds for aggressive crocodiles .....

My comment is to clear your mind, read this essay and eat more brain food before drafting a proposal (loaded with your glory SCI) to grab a fat grant .....  Read more

The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress  by Robert A. Heinlein, Orb Books; (1997) 384 pages ISBN 0312863551 (paperback)

A gripping tale of revolution on the moon in 2076, where "Loonies" (lunar residents as they call themselves) are kept poor and oppressed by an Earth-based Authority that turns huge profits at their expense. Also, because of their adaptation to the Moon's lower gravity, Loonies cannot safely return to live on Earth, so their exile is a permanent. A small band of dissidents, including a one-armed computer jock, a radical young woman, a "past-his-prime" academic .....  Read more

Orchids for Dummies  by Steven Frowine, For Dummies press; (2005) 288 pages ISBN 0764567594 (paperback)

The other day, I overheard two Pis talking when I passed the front lobby decorated with exotic orchids. Pointing to a graceful Dendrobium, one guy told his pal, "How nice the Phalaenopsis." He may not be able to distinguish the orchids, but he got a fat 3-years grant for one sort of molecular biology on one orchid from our funding agency. Surely, this step-by-step handy guide will help the guy and all of us know orchids, keep them healthy, encourage blooms, and even to propagate them.  Read more
