11-6-2005 After 43 years of service to the Institute of Botany/Institute of Plant & Microbial Biology, Dr. Ching-San Chen, at the age of 70, retired in In July 1, 2005. But Dr. Chen will remain active in IPMB affairs and plans to terminate his research program toward the end of 2006.
In the early 60s, Chen started his research career as a assistant research fellow on a variety of studies of plant biochemistry. Later, his interests branched out to other areas such as cDNA cloning, gene expression of the major prolamines of rice and regulation of a rice prolamine storage protein gene. Dr. Chen and his students developed ways to purify and characterize several isoforms of glactosidases, RNA helicase, and some other enzymes in mung bean. This work led to his recent studies on the structure and function of a mungbean defensin VrD1 from bruchid-resistant mungbean seeds.
Chen served as institute director for 6 years, and later, administered the Life Science Division of the National Science Council for 3 years. We believe Chen will continue to promote the interests of plant biochemistry and molecular biology through his experience and connection to various organizations.
Director Ho will throw a lunch party in the institute's courtyard on Friday November 11 to honor Dr. Chen. |

10-29-2005 See for Yourself! Even though the IPMB has been a fixture in the Nankang area for more than 40 years, much of what we do at the Institute is not readily visible to public. Even though this Web site highlights some of our scientific endeavors as well as our activities with and on behalf of our community, the best way to learn more about the Institute is to visit us. We invite you to come to our "Open House" on Oct. 29, 2005, from 10:00 to 15:30.
There will be a Popular Science Talk in 10:30 in room 106. Our director, Dr. Ho, will talk about "Plant resources and transgenic/GM plants" in plain language.
In addition, you may visit our core facilities to learn how our scientists do their research. |

10-14-2005 Welcome aboard! We have one more associate research fellow: Dr. Wolfgang Schmidt officially joined our team this morning. He started to visit labs, meet people and talk about science. And he had a quick lunch with colleagues at room 123. He is quite familiar with chopsticks -- a good start. |

10-13-2005 IPMB table tennis team wins third crown

How nice! Our ping-pong team mates claimed their place in the history of Annual Academia Table Tennis Tournament when they won their third straight championship by defeating the Geology team at a final match. "... And I hope it is not going to stop at three," one of our lady champions said after winning the final game. So the champion photos deserve to be hung here for a while. Our "dream team" included 4 lady champions and 7 gentlemen.
Fifteen teams competed in the tournament this year. To win the crown in trio is surely an achievement ..... |

9-1-2005 Bravo, New leadership trio finally established at IPMB. Director Ho invited Drs. Long Fang Chen and Na-Sheng Lin to join the leadership team as deputy directors, upgrading our efforts to reach the goal of "innovation for the future with plants and microbes". Chen, an experienced cytogenetist, is one of our senior PIs working on senescence retarding vegetables via a transgenic approach. Dr Lin's name is well linked to her pioneer work on the molecular biology of bamboo mosaic virus. She won an academic award in the areas of biology, medicine, and agriculture from the Ministry of Education 2 years ago and is also active in the genetic engineering of orchids against viral disease resistance.
There was saying "... The art of leadership, the art of command ... is the art of dealing with humanity."
An new era at IPMB ..... |

| 05-18-2005 Dr. Ming-Che Shih, a biology professor at the University of Iowa, has been here for several months as a visiting professor. The main goal of his visit is to establish a long-term collaborative project on the evolutionary genomics of abiotic stress tolerance in rice cultivars. Dr. Shih's current research also focuses on the hypoxia signaling mechanisms and regulatory pathways in Arabidopsis. You may visit his website at UI for details of his research activities. |

April 15, 2003 - Dr. Na-Sheng Lin one of our molecular biologists, was honored with Award for Biology, Medical and Agricultural Sciences of the 46th Academic Awards of the Ministry of Education (教育部學術獎) in recognition of her prestigious contributions on molecular biology of bamboo virus.
During the ceremony Minster of Education JT Huang praised the recipients and emphasized the value of the awards.
"... By this award we hope to cultivate prestigious leaderships in education and research circles."
... Speaking on behalf of all the recipients, Lin said that the most uplifting part of research work is the fact that one can be satisfied both in spirit and in wisdom. She also encouraged young people to follow this path.
"... Winning this award is not the end of our academic achievement, but a new beginning," Lin said.
To date, Lin was the 5th recipient of our Institute for such award in last 40 years. Chou-Shong Huang (1977), Wei-Chin Chang (1980), Chang-Hung Chou (1983) and Hong-Pang Wu (1985) of our Institute were among the previous recipients of the Awards.
