PictureNovember 15, 2006 - Dr. WU, Shu-Hsing has been recognized by the Thomson Citation Laureate Award. Her Plant Journal paper on Arabidopsis senescence has been one the eight most cited papers published by Taiwanese scientists in recent years. This is indeed a wonderful news for Shu as well as for IPMB.

Thomson Scientific announced it has honoured eight leading professors with the first ‘Thomson Citation Laureate Award’ presented in Taiwan. This accolade is awarded to top Taiwanese research professors in recognition of their pioneering achievements and influential contribution to international research and development (R&D).

The prestigious Thomson Citation Laureate Award is presented based on the number of citations that an academic research paper has, reflecting its impact and influence on a given subject and the importance attributed to it by subsequent research.

Dr. Na-Sheng Lin October 13, 2006  Dr. Na-Sheng Lin has been named Distinguished Research Fellow in recognition of her achievements in the laboratory, classroom and community. The designation, recommended by the Advisory Committee of IPMB, was approved by the Academia Sinica on October 13, 2006. The title of Distinguished Research Fellows, is among the highest honors that can be bestowed on a faculty member by the Academia Sinica. Those selected for the title have been recognized nationally and usually internationally for the importance of their research.

Lin, a Deputy Director at IPMB, was recruited three weeks ago by Academia Sinica as Interim Director of the Agricultural Biotechnology Research Center (ABRC).

"IPMB has been very supportive of my work, in particular by providing me with an environment where basic research is highly valued and rewarded," Lin says. "I am delighted to receive such fellowship. It's a great honor and one that I didn't expect. I am deeply grateful to those who participated in the nomination and selection processes."

Despite, her research and the award, Lin doesn't try to take all the credit. "A lot of the reasons why I'm getting this award is because of the outstanding colleagues, associates and graduate students I've worked with," she said.

IPMB colleagues threw a reception honoring Lin on October 13, at 4 pm right after the regular Friday Seminar.

Dr. Jei-Fu Shaw
October 28, 2005 - In September, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Council elected 376 members as Fellows of AAAS, including Drs. Na-Sheng Lin and Jei-Fu Shaw of IPMB.

These individuals will be recognized for their contributions to science at the Fellows Forum to be held on 18 February 2006 during the AAAS Annual Meeting in St. Louis. The new Fellows will receive a certificate and a blue and gold rosette pin as a symbol of their distinguished accomplishments.   Read more ...

06-01-2006    For last three years, Dr. Tuan-hua David Ho has guided the IPMB while keeping a finger on our national agricultural biotech research's pulse. His leadership acuity is complemented by fruitful achievements of his long-term studies on plant stress. From June 2006, his directorship and the tenure of the associate directors Drs. Na-Sheng Lin and Long-Fang O. Chen were extended to a consecutive 3 years by Academia Sinica. Indeed, our leadership trio played and will continue to play a crucial role in ensuring IPMB's vigor and improvement. Their actions are inspiring our colleagues to think creatively and do more.
Leaders don't force people to follow--they invite them on a journey.

  Dr. Yuh-Jan Shieh
03-16-2006    Dr. Yuh-Jan Shieh has been known for his reserved manner and his quiet but strong beliefs, including a willingness to point out wrongs he saw around him.

Since 1967, Dr. Shieh served 39 years at the Institute of Botany/Institute of Plant & Microbial Biology, and retired on February 1, 2006. During such a long tenure, he had served for many years as managing editor for our journal Botanical Bulletin of Academia Sinica, 6 years as associate director, and did graduate teaching as joint professor at National Taiwan University and National Defense Medical Center.

His early work included inorganic ion transport in algae and the relation between photosynthesis capacity of rice canopy and productivity. Then his interests branched out to the areas of the primary assimilation of carbon and nitrogen in C3, C4 plants, algae and cyanobacteria. His studies on forest primary bio-productivity on Yanan-yang Lake and Kandelia candel in Tamsui River upgraded our understanding of our local ecosystems.

Colleagues got together at a party hosted by Director Ho in the afternoon of March 16th to honor Shieh's deep commitment and contribution to the institute. Shieh's experienced and seasoned leadership as both a faculty member and associate director earned him the respect of his colleagues.
  Dr. Shih-Long Tu
2-1-2006    Welcome aboard! One more assistant research fellow, Dr. Shih-Long Tu, has joined our research term. Dr. Tu has started to build his lab on the third floor of South Hall. His current research interest is mainly on the molecular mechanisms of chromophore biosynthesis. As he told us during his seminar, he plans to work on both the chemical mechanisms and molecular basis of ferredoxin-dependent bilin reductases (FDBRs) as well as to reveal novel biochemical activities of these enzymes.
