Dr. Paul Verslues
“DRY LAB”  (9-17-2007)

Perhaps it was inevitable: the addition of a "Sunny Lab" to IPMB last month has now been followed by the addition of a "Dry lab". Our newest faculty member, Dr. Paul Verslues, has a number of research interests; many of which are related to how plants respond to dehydration and other environmental stresses.

Dr. Verslues officially arrived at IPMB on September 17th and his laboratory will be in room 426. He is temporarily in room 513. Paul encourages anyone interested to come by and talk about some "dry" topics, even on those days when it is not dry, or sunny, here.

Dr. Verslues started his scientific endeavors at the University of Missouri-Columbia where he received his BS and MS degrees and began his interest in plant stress. He then completed his PhD at the University of California-Riverside and was most recently a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Jian-Kang Zhu at UC-Riverside. Paul is interested in plant metabolism and water relations; particularly the changes in proline metabolism that occur under stress and the mechanisms that allow plants their control their cellular solute and water content to adapt to changing environments.
Ms Mei-Ching Chen
8-1-2007    We've gotten a new assistant specialist, Ms Mei-Ching Chen, on the team at IPMB. She has been fulltime for a couple of weeks now. Her major project will be on everything about processing intellectual property of our biotechnology achievements. She will assist PI of IPMB and ABRC in handling relative intellectual properties issues, including patent filing, technology licensing, MTA (material transfer agreement), CRADA (Cooperative Research and Development Agreement), and etc. Besides, she will also help our National Science and Technology Program on Agricultural Biotechnology on similar tough jobs. Once you get breakthrough someday she will be the first one to knock your door. IPMBers, don't hesitate to visit her office at the AS Administration Building (phone at 27899383 ext 111) which is right across street. Welcome aboard, Mei-Ching! We are all thrilled that you've joined us.
Dr. Rachel Swee-suak Ko
8-1-2007    "Hi everyone, I've been lucking to join IPMB since August 1st. and I thought it would be polite to introduce myself. My name is Rachel Swee-suak Ko, and I currently manage a team at AS-BEST to support PI in some research such as GMO seed multiplication and field evaluation as well as managing AS-BEST greenhouse facilities. I found it tremendously challenging being an budding manager in a new culture... I think that's it from me for now."

Dr. Rachel Swee-suak Ko received her Ph.D in horticulture at national Chung Hsing University. Before joining us she gained extensive experience in vegetable breeding during her 10-year tenure at Asia Vegetable Research and Development (AVRDC), and in agricultural biotech research at Dr. Yee-yung Charng's Lab at ABRC. Her main areas of interests are in the identification and characterization of tissue-specific and/or ABA-inducible promoters, lignocellulosic mutants, silicon transporters, and nutrient related mutants, using the TRIM rice mutants developed recently at Academia Sinica.
