IPMB Science Features
Focusing on blogging personality, driven life and perspectives
IPMB science features are a platform that allow our colleagues and readers to post their thoughts on recent developments and ideas in their corner of their sciences. As a new site feature, these will grow and develop into living, breathing areas for the exchange of links, thoughts, and information. As time goes on, we'll be adding new features, blogs, and authors/bloggers, so come back often to find out what our bloggers are up to!

The map-based sequence of the rice genome - and the subsequent functional genomics analysis  by Yue-ie Hsing  (4-8-2007)

ImageBetter understanding of the rice genome will facilitate rice research, which in turn speeds up rice biotechnology. As the first step in a systematic and complete functional characterization of the rice genome, the International Rice Genome Sequencing Project (IRGSP) has generated and analyzed a highly accurate finished sequence of the rice genome that is anchored to the genetic map. Taiwan joined this consortium, cooperating with another 9 countries, to decode the rice genome...

Professor Shang-Fa Yang
Are we a big part in your memory?  by Wei-chin Chang  (3-9-2007)

Our life is filled with contradictions, and IPMB has room for them all, crocodiles and lone rangers, solid advices and sneering fun, cold facts and outrageous opinions - plus more than a few of prettiest and smartest ladies in academic. Eulogy (Shang-Fa Yang, 1932-2007)  by Bryant Yang  (2-23-2007)

Accomplished and modest are two traits that are not often seen together. A colleague of my father wrote "Although he was brilliant plant biologist, Shang Fa was modest and unassuming colleague." And one of my chemistry mentors wrote to me and said "I was so touched that your father was so kind to me and down-to earth despite his professional stature and accomplishments." The similarly of the tributes underscores the consistency and authenticity with which my father lives his life.¡@» read more

Plasticity in plant development: the changing mind of root epidermal cells  by Wolfgang Schmidt  (2-7-2007)

Roots provide the plant with water and nutrients and play a pivotal role in the interaction with beneficial soil microbes. The tissue that is in direct contact with the soil solution, the root epidermis, is composed of two cell types: root hair cells with a long tubular-shaped outgrowth, and non-hair cells....¡@.» read more

Professor Shu-Chen Grace Chen's work on gene expression and regulation in chloroplasts  by Kin-Ying To  (2-7-2007)
ImageI was shaken on being informed that our respected Professor Shu-Chen Grace Chen passed away on 30 January 2007. I worked in her lab as a postdoctoral fellow from the summer of 1994 to the spring of 1999. Professor Chen was truly an outstanding person with a pleasant personality. She showed excellence her academic career and had a happy family life. I therefore believe that Professor Chen should be awarded in Paradise.¡@¡@» read more
