To meet the need of rapid growth on knowledge of the life science development, educating and training talented students for the biological science study should be initiated as early as possible. In this project, we select senior high school students, who have strong interest and high potential in the biological sciences as our source students for this cultivating program. The faculties involved in this project are outstanding scientists with different specialties from various institutes in the Life Sciences section of the Academia Sinica. The purpose of this project is to arouse student interest in research and train them to become well-qualified biology scientists in the future.

In the first year, the participating students will be instructed with basic topics on the life sciences related to fundamental biology, zoology, botany, microbiology, molecular biology and biotechnology etc. to enhance their background knowledge. The right attitude and manner toward science, basic experimental skills, ways to collect, analyze and organize scientific information and scientific presentation etc. are within the scope of our aim.

In the second and third year, the selected students could choose a laboratory to conduct research work under the guidance of laboratory investigator based on student's interest. At the fall semester of the third year, the students will have a poster presentation on their experiment for evaluation.

For the 2005 enrolled senior high students, a total of 64 selected students were joined in this project and about 52 are participating in the second year training. In the 2006 fall, a second group of new senior high school students will enroll and begin for another cycle of training.

After one to two years of guidance, improvements in their study are usually apparent. Besides reading the textbooks, they can search the related materials and ask questions actively. Discussing with professors and classmates, it makes them logical to analysis experimental data. Several students of 3rd year class are admitted to take advanced study in the university the next academic year. Over the past three years, students participated in this program were elected as National members to attend the International Biology Olympiad with good reputation. In the 2005 International Biology Olympiad, two students won Gold Medals and two Silver, while three Silver in 2004 and one Silver and one Bronze in 2003.

To date, there are more than satisfactory numbers of students showing great enthusiasm and potential in this field. Nearly all students report tremendous benefits from participation in this program. The URL of this program is: http://www.sinica.edu.tw/~hispj/
